Areolar Gland Abscess


Areolar gland abscess is a condition in which areolar gland grows significantly. Areolar gland is situated beneath or underneath the areola (dark circular area around the nipple) of the breast. An abscess is a pocket of pus that is often accompanied by inflammation and swelling. Other alternatives names of the condition are abscess-areolar gland and subareolar abscess. It is important to highlight that it is an uncommon and risk-free condition that does not affect breast-feeding women.

Main cause of Areolar gland abscess is blockage of ducts or small glands due to which bacteria develops into that part. Immune system of the body fight against them as it sends white blood cells into those blocked ducts area. When dead tissue, bacteria, blood cells stew together in pocket of abscess, pus forms. And if anybody nipple is pierced, then infection sets in and bacteria get through skin causing Areolar gland abscess.
