Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin condition that makes skin dry and itchy. The term “Atopic” refers to group of diseases that have inherited tendency of developing after allergic conditions. And term “Dermatitis” refers to inflammation of the skin. The condition is experienced by 90% of people before the age of 5 years. And in rare cases, the condition occurs in the later stages of life. The disease is more prevalent in females. The condition is not contagious, but run in families.

The exact cause of the condition is not yet fully understood, but researchers believe the condition can be caused by hosts of factors. Genetic and environmental factors play crucial role in causing  atopic dermatitis. The disease is also related with malfunctioning of the immune system of the body. A family history of disease increases the chances of causing the condition in upcoming generations.

The condition cannot be prevented.
